Last season I rode in an amazing 1966 Mercedes 230SL and this year I shot a shockingly fast 1968 Mercedes 300SEL 6.3. I thought that jamming the monster 6.3 SOHC V8 into the demure little Pagoda body would make a nice German Corvette. Apparently other folks had the same idea as me.
Apparently with some creative firewall work, the 6.3 slides in without too much of a fuss. Must be quite the experience to drive!

Understeer for days.
Source: Having worked on a number of M180 based engines I can say they are fairly light and compact and the M100 is nearly the same length because of its insane bore.

Brilliant.
Pagodas have skyrocketed in value.

I was afraid of that. But power oversteer would be possible hypothetically?

Mechatronik does this, and similar.

I know :( I want one but damn. They’re like E-Type money now.

Yeah but the M100 is period-correct. I’ll never get behind putting modern engines in old cars. If I wanted a fast, reliable, fuel-efficient car I’d by a new one. But I want dirty, sexy carbs and an old-school sound. Still good execution of the swap though.

Still, 62:38 weight distribution. Maybe an M116 would work better.

Work better, yes. But be cooler? Debatable. Damn you have the best username on the site.

I think that modified cars are nearly always less valuable than a 100% original. The only exceptions might be cars that have non-existent collector value even if they would in perfect condition.
But I still like the idea of having a pagoda M-B with a modern straight six. An M100 engine is a non-original engine anyway so it isn’t much better. I think correct cylinder number over period correctness wins in this case.

The M100 seems like a great Idea at first, until you realize that it’ll ruin just about anything that isn’t a great big luxury sedan.

The first one who did that was no other than Erich Waxenberger, a bigger-than-life character if there ever was one (just for laughs look up about him and his exploits as team manager of MB’s brief foray into rallying in the 80s).
So basically yes, a bit of a hotrod with an absolutely impossible weight distribution. But what an engine! Did they manage to do the conversion without adding unsightly bulges to the bonnet?

Even if its some rubbish like a 1980s 3.1 GM V6?

They did! And Mercedes themselves looked into offering the engine but when the R107 had a different V8 they decided not to bother.

Everything is nuts. Either the economy needs to fall apart or it already has, and the smart people are putting their $ in vehicles....

No! I forgot to say that being an inline engine is pretty damn important for six cylinder engines. Boxers are quite cool too.
